Rory McIlroy comments on stunning divorce filing from wife Erica Stoll
Rory McIlroy’s camp offered comment on his stunning divorce filing from his wife Erica Stoll.
His communication team confirmed Tuesday that he had filed for divorce in a Florida court from his wife of seven years.
“Rory McIlroy’s communications team confirmed today that a divorce has been filed. They stressed Rory’s desire to ensure this difficult time is as respectful and amicable as possible,” said a statement from his manager, Sean O’Flaherty.
McIlroy has a 3-year-old daughter Poppy with Stoll.
The two were first linked in 2014 after he broke off his engagement with tennis star Carolina Wozniacki, two years after he met Stoll, a former PGA transport official, at the Ryder Cup, according to People.
“Erica that week was always the one that was checking us in and out. She was there at transportation, so she was always in the car park over there,” he said in 2019, per NBC.
“But yeah, it’s still cool to look around and think about that week, and obviously everything that’s happened since then. It’s pretty cool.”
He confirmed in May 2015 that the two had started dating to the Times of London.
“I am very happy in my love life,” he told the outlet, as transcribed by People.
The two later wed in a $250,000 bash at Ashford Castle in Ireland in 2017, following his 2015 Paris proposal, according to People.
The guest list included Stevie Wonder, Ed Sheeran, Christ Martin, according to eonline.com, with the Irish Independent adding that more than 200 people attended.

Stoll had publicly supported her husband throughout the years, including the Ryder Cup last year in Italy. She also participated in the Part 3 Contest as the 2023 Masters.
The Irish Independent noted that Stoll did not appear at the Masters last month.
“Erica has been around me quite a lot at tournaments but we have really just tried to keep it low key,” he told the Irish Independent in 2015.
“She is a very low key person, not the kind to broadcast stuff, but that side of my life is really good just now. We are excited, our parents are excited so it is a really happy time.”
“For me, Erica brings such a level of normality to everything. She has a calming presence, a sereneness and that’s not just on me; it is noticeable in any company. She never wants to be the centre of attention and is always very comfortable in the background.”
“She has been a great influence on me and has given such a great balance to my life – between who I am when people see me out here and who I am at home.”
This divorce filing comes two days before the PGA Championship.
The 35-year-old was spotted preparing for the event in Louisville on Tuesday afternoon.
McIlroy has the second-best odds to win the event, after winning last weekend’s Wells Fargo Championship by finishing 17-under par.
He won the PGA Championship in 2012 and 2014.
Scottie Scheffler, who just welcomed his first child, Bennett, alongside wife Meredith, is the heavy favorite with +400 odds.
