Carl Lawson mum on his limited Jets’ playing time: ‘keep working’

Carl Lawson isn’t ready to express his feelings regarding his playing time.

At least not yet.

When asked about his limited snaps in his first three games, the hulking defensive end declined to offer his opinion on the matter.

“Those are questions for coaches,” Lawson said. “I just line up, keep working.”

Lawson does feel like he’s getting closer to feeling like himself this week, finally past the back troubles that cost him a few weeks of practices and led to him missing the team’s Week 1 victory over the Bills.

“It’s been taking me a while, but I felt so much better this week,” he said.

Lawson, who declined to offer any specifics on the injury, has received just 52 snaps so far in three games, in part due to the Jets’ deep rotation of defensive linemen and the emergence of second-year player Jermaine Johnson.

Lawson has just three tackles this season.

Asked if his lack of playing time has been frustrating, Lawson said: “No comment, but I know what type of player I am and what I did last year coming off the Achilles [injury]. I feel like I can be a better player this year now that I’m starting to get my body back right. That’s pretty much where my head space is at.”

Quarterback Zach Wilson ditched his signature headband Sunday against the Chiefs, but it had nothing to do with trying to change things up.

“As the weather starts to cool down a little bit, I feel like I don’t need it as much,” he said. “I brought it back out these last two practices, but it’s slowly going away.”

Wilson was noncommittal on his plans against the Broncos.

The fact he played well without the headband won’t factor into his decision.

“I am not superstitious like that,” the young quarterback said.

Cornerback DJ Reed remained out on Thursday as he deals with a concussion.

Robert Saleh said Wednesday he was hopeful Reed would be able to play.

The Jets will already be down No. 3 corner Brandin Echols (hamstring). … LB Samuel Eguavoen (ankle) didn’t practice.

OT Carter Warren (shoulder) and S Jarrick Bernard-Converse (foot) were limited.

Safety Tony Adams (hamstring), OT Mekhi Becton (knee) and OL Wes Schweitzer (concussion) were all full participants after being limited on Wednesday.
