Start of summer marked by a week of rain in NYC

The start of summer is officially a bummer.

A gloomy, wet weather system hovering over New York City will wash away plans for would-be beach bums hoping to kick off the season having fun in the sun.

“I can’t tell you when the last sunny day was,” said Stephen McCloud, meteorologist for Fox Forecast Center.

“It’s going to be a raw, kind of damp day to start out, you know, the first full day of summer.”

McCloud’s dreary Thursday forecast was also marked by temperatures about 15 degrees below the typical low 80s for this time of year. Rain was expected to keep pouring from the afternoon into the evening.

And the long-term forecast showed a lot more of the same.

“Unfortunately for the foreseeable future … chance of rain really over the next seven days,” said McCloud.

“This area of low pressure is kind of hanging out over the Northeast. It’s really cut off from what we call the jet stream, so therefore it can’t move, it doesn’t have any force or mechanism to actually move it along, you know, push it out, so to speak.”

The wet weather may have some benefits — including eventually bringing relief from the persistent hot and dry conditions that’ve fueled raging wildfires in Quebec.

“It’s very beneficial rain … parts of the area are almost in a drought — like we have not seen a lot of rain here recently, so it’s very welcome rain,” McCloud offered.

“Eventually … next week the jet stream shifts … allows that area of low pressure to start to kick out.”

Temperatures were not expected to rise past 66 degrees Thursday, although the mercury could get into the 70s and low 80s over a wet weekend.

“Great way to start summer,” McCloud said sarcastically.
