TikTok influencers claim men can improve jawlines by taping mouths shut overnight

Social media users are holding their breath over the results of this advice.

Multiple TikTok influencers have shared what they claim is a simple, yet unconventional way for men to improve their jawlines: go to sleep with your mouth taped shut.

Last December, Ollie Martin, a TikToker with 500,000 followers, encouraged people to tape their mouths to obtain a chiseled jawline.

He told HuffPost recently the seemingly gimmicky practice worked for him.

“When I discovered mouth taping, I approached it cautiously, fearing it might be dangerous,” Martin, of England, said. “My jawline became more defined and my maxilla muscle became more visible, giving me a shaper and well-defined appearance.”

He told the outlet he saw a change in his face after three months.

Another TikToker, Gabriel Dridi, posted a video earlier this year also suggesting mouth taping would lead to a better jawline.

The post, which has been viewed more than 2 million times, advises social media users to poke holes in the porous surgical tape.

“How to boost your looks (Men)” the text along with the video reads. “Sleep with tape on your mouth. Improves your jawline. Improves shape of your nose.”

But medical professionals cast doubt on mouth taping being a quick fix.

“It is unlikely a short course of mouth taping will change the bone structure of a person’s jawline,” Dr. Samuel Lin, a plastic surgeon and Harvard Medical School associate professor of surgery, told HuffPost.

Dr. Nilong Vyas, a sleep expert, also agreed, though she noted mouth breathing can change your face.

“Chronic mouth breathers, over time, can impact their facial structure, but wearing mouth tape for a few days overnight will not show any improvements to bone structure,” Vyas told HuffPost.

This isn’t the first time the benefits and dangers of mouth taping — that forces people asleep to breathe through their nose instead of their mouth — have been raised.

“This is one of the most dangerous trends I’ve heard of in some time, and I’m quite concerned that it is being advocated as a ‘health’ trend,” Dr. David Culpepper, a Lexington, Kentucky-based general practitioner, told Fox News Digital last August.

“To put it quite simply, intentionally obstructing your airways during sleep is a terrible idea.”

But health and wellness influencer Cory Rodriguez said breathing through the nose instead of mouth would help a person’s oral health.

“This is going to help your oral health, it’s going to help your sleep, it’s going to help dry mouth [and] snoring,” he said last year, “because you are humidifying and moisturizing the air.”
