Josh Allen picked as ‘Madden NFL 24’ cover athlete: ‘So surreal’

Josh Allen can bust out video game moves on the field — and now he has the “Madden” cover to prove it.

The Bills quarterback was named the “Madden NFL 24” cover boy, EA announced Wednesday.

Allen grew up playing the game, he said, and called the honor “humbling.”

“It’s so surreal. Madden has such a special place in my heart,” he told ESPN.

Allen is coming off of another strong season in Buffalo in which he threw for 4,283 yards and tossed 35 touchdowns en route to a 13-3 record for the Bills.

He’s spearheaded the Bills’ resurgence, leading the team to four straight playoff appearances and three division titles.

But Buffalo again failed to reach the Super Bowl last season, losing to the Bengals in the AFC Divisional Round.

The signal caller joins an elite group of athletes to star on the video game cover, many of whom are also quarterbacks.

Among them, Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes — who each had previously graced the cover — shared “Madden 22,” Lamar Jackson was featured on “Madden 21,” and Drew Brees was on the “Madden 11” cover.

For Allen, it’s the latest culmination in his football journey.

“To think about where I was not too long ago and coming out of high school with zero offers, going to junior college and have one offer, University of Wyoming of all places, and then fast-forward to now,” he told ESPN.

Allen’s not done, though — he wants to join the exclusive “99 Club,” made up of players with a 99/100 rating

Mahomes joined the illustrious group in 2022.

Last season, Allen reached a 96 overall and finished the year rated 93.

Though some Bills fans may harbor concerns about the “Madden” curse, a trend in which the players on the video game’s cover get injured or underperform, it hasn’t packed much of a punch in recent years.

Brady won league MVP and led the Patriots to a Super Bowl as the 2018 cover boy, while Mahomes missed two games with a minor injury while winning the Chiefs a title in 2020.
